Our History

A roadside original…

It all started in 1937, when John Quill built what was then a service station and motor lodge along U.S. Route 80—one of the main arteries of the American West during the golden age of road travel. Designed to serve motorists making their way through Southern Arizona, the Quill family’s roadside stop offered fuel, rest, and a warm welcome to travelers passing through Bisbee. The motel remained family-run until the mid-1970s, quietly anchoring this stretch of Tombstone Canyon as the town and the times evolved around it.

Today, the Jonquil Motel continues that tradition of straightforward, genuine hospitality. While the cars and motorcycles may look different than they did in the 1930s, the spirit remains the same: a comfortable place to pull in, settle down, and feel taken care of. Our rooms retain their vintage character while offering the modern comforts travelers expect, all in a setting that feels relaxed, unpretentious, and rooted in place.

Whether you’re rolling in on a long road trip, arriving by motorcycle, or settling into town for a few nights, the Jonquil offers an easygoing home base just a short walk from Bisbee’s historic downtown. With ground-floor rooms, generous parking, and hosts who know the rhythm of the town, the Jonquil Motel is still doing what it was built to do—welcoming travelers, one stop at a time.
